Our nations election systems have and can be attacked. The problems with voting machines are well documented. But the potential for wholesale attacks on the voting system are more troubling in terms of scale and ease for a foreign adversary. The responsibility for securing these systems falls on unsophisticated and underfunded local governments. So in the face of this daunting challenge what can we as the cyber community do to help? In this talk we examine this almost perfect case study of how to defend a critical system from sophisticated attack, and make a call to the cyber community to get involved. Without exaggeration, the very basis of our democracy depends on it.
